Don't be misled. The name of the film may be Duets, but the soundtrack only features three actual duets. The film centers around wacky characters at a karaoke bar, and the soundtrack follows suit, featuring actors singing! Gwyneth Paltrow joins Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds for a cover of "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" and Huey Lewis for a go at Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'." "Try a Little Tenderness" is run through by Paul Giamatti and Arnold McCuller. Paltrow has a sweet whine in her voice, but it's no match for the husky drawl of Kim Carnes for "Bette Davis Eyes." Huey Lewis is no Joe Cocker with "Feelin' Alright," but it's a valiant rendition. On the other hand, Arnold McCuller's soulful reading of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" recasts the song as a spiritual. Denzel Washington stars as a black football coach hired over a white coach at a recently racially integrated Virginia high school in the early 1970s. Director Boaz Yakin (A Price Above Rubies, Fresh) has a baby boomer's heart in mind with a stylistic array of early 1970s sounds supported by Trevor Rabin's orchestral score (one seven-minute excerpt, "Titans Spirit," finishes things off here). Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's "Express Yourself" is, perhaps, the greatest surprise, while oddball favorites such as Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," and Eric Burdon and War's "Spill the Wine" match up with country star Buck Owens's "Act Naturally." Covers include a fiery version of Sly Stone's "I Want to Take You Higher" and Leon Russell's laid-back barrelhouse-piano take on the doomsday anthem "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." Cat Stevens's "Peace Train" rolls into the station in its original version. Creedence Clearwater Revival (who appear with "Up Around the Bend") are outswamped by the Hollies' imitation of their sound with "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)." --Rob O'Connor |

More ambitious in scope than any of its other animated films (before or to come), Disney's 1940 Fantasia was a dizzying, magical, and highly enjoyable marriage of classical music and animated images. Fantasia 2000 features some breathtaking animation and storytelling, and in a few spots soars to wonderful high points, but it still more often than not has the feel of walking in its predecessor's footsteps as opposed to creating its own path. A family of whales swimming and soaring to Respighi's The Pines of Rome is magical to watch, but ends all too soon; a forest sprite's dance of life, death, and rebirth to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring too clearly echoes the original Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria sequence. But when it's on target, Fantasia 2000 is glorious enough to make you giddy. Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a perfect narrative set to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Donald Duck's guest appearance as the assistant to Noah (of ark fame) set to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches is a welcome companion piece (though not an equal) to The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the one original Fantasia piece included here. The high point of Fantasia 2000, though, is a fantastic day-in-the-life sequence of 1930s New York City set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and animated in the style of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld; it's a perfect melding of music, story, and animation. Let's hope future Fantasias (reportedly in the works) take a cue from the best of this compilation. In Common Ground director Donna Deitch (Desert Hearts) uses three stories to explore attitudes toward homosexuality in the fictional small town of Homer, Connecticut, over a period of almost half a century. "A Friend of Dorothy's" tells the story of a girl who returns to Homer in 1954 after leaving the Navy. When it emerges that she was discharged after being arrested in a gay bar, she is ostracized by everyone except the owner of a local diner, a woman who has her own reasons for wanting to help Dorothy to escape. "M. Roberts" is set in 1974, when a gay teacher (Steven Weber) has to decide whether to jeopardize his career in order to help a troubled pupil who has been targeted by homophobic bullies. Finally, in present-day Homer, "Andy & Amos" follows the preparations for a gay wedding. While protesters gather on the town commons, Amos's father (Ed Asner) has to choose between long-held prejudices and his love for his son. Thanks to a Harvey Fierstein script that combines sexual politics with humor and believable characters, this is the most successful part of Common Ground. Ed Asner's gradual realization that his son's monogamous, long-term gay relationship is more conventional than most heterosexual marriages is deftly handled, achieving a balance between message and drama that the other stories lack.Despite the credentials of their authors (playwrights Paula Vogel and Terrence McNally) the first two segments feel more like lectures than stories. Their impact is weakened by clumsy dialogue (Dorothy's mother actually says, "I have no daughter") and stereotypical characters. The film's message is an important one: the road to equality is built upon the struggles and sacrifices of past generations. Unfortunately Common Ground is too uneven to deliver that message with the force it deserves. --Simon Leake |

Somewhere in the great wlsewhere there is a higher calling, a nobler ambition. Don Quixote is sure because he's read so in books about chivalry. But aged Quixote is not merely content to read. On a Midnight Clear 2000 years ago three wise men enter a manger where a babe is wrapped in swaddling clothes. It is an infant called Brian...and the three wise men are in the wrong manger. For the rest of his life Brian (Graham Chapman) finds himself regarded as something of a Messiah yet he's always in the shadow of this Other Guy from Galilee. Brian is witness to the Sermon of the Mount but his seat is in such a bad location that he can't hear any of it ("Blessed are the cheesemakers?"). Ultimately he is brought before Pontius Pilate and sentenced to crucifixion which takes place at that crowded non-exclusive execution site a few blocks shy of Calvary. Rather than utter the Last Six Words Brian leads his fellow crucifixees in a spirited rendition of a British music hall cheer-up song "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life." The whole Monty Python gang (Chapman John Cleese Michael Palin Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam) are on hand in multiple roles playing such sacred characters as Stan Called Loretta Deadly Dirk Casts the First Stone and Intensely Dull Youth; also showing up are Goon Show veteran Spike Milligan and a Liverpool musician named George Harrison. |

Brown sugar (optional - for flavor not sweetness) ¼ cup nuts (optional - almond slivers, pecan pieces, walnut pieces) Wet Ingredients: ½ cup oil (safflower, canola, corn) 16 packets of Splenda 1 egg 1 Tbsn vanilla ¼ tspn salt 1) PREHEAT oven to 375°F. 2) In your mixer, blend all the dry ingredients for 3 minutes on low speed. No mixer? Put them in a plastic box with a tight light and shake, shake, shake! 3) Whisk all the wet ingredients together. When adding the SplendaTM and salt, spread them evenly on the surface of the oil/egg mixture. Whisk well. 4) Mix dry and wet ingredients in your mixer or by hand until you see no more dry spots. 5) Drop tablespoon of dough on a baking sheet with parchment paper (or lightly greased) about 2 inches apart. Flatten cookies a little to help them cook more evenly. 6) BAKE ?bake cookies for 10-11 minutes (or until lightly brown). Cool for 1 minute and move to a wire rack (to stop the cookies from overcooking). Let cool and Enjoy! Variations: - Add (or replace nuts) with mini-chocolate chips, raisins, dried cranberries, or even your favorite trail mix. - Instead of pumpkin spice, use dried powdered ginger and a little fresh grated ginger for a healthy gingerbread cookie! - Instead of vanilla, use almond extract or any other flavor. |
